At Whetstone Field our intent is that children will gain an appreciation of number and number operations, enabling mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately which is key to children being successful in mathematics;
> Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
> Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
> Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
This mirrors the overall National Curriculum aims for the end of KS2 but we also feel that by accomplishing these aims, children will be prepared for their next stage of learning in KS3 as well as giving them the necessary skills to build upon in their future lives.
Throughout Nursery, we use materials from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and Maths is planned accordingly to suit the children’s needs and allow time for consolidation. From Reception to Year 6 we base our curriculum for Maths around ‘Can Do’ Maths resources. Our Maths scheme is sequenced where new concepts are taught in small, manageable steps so that children can build their confidence while attaining a secure, deep understanding of Maths. Previous concepts are revisited often so that children can constantly revise earlier skills and continue to build upon them.
