At Whetstone Field we want to make sure that all pupils can;
> Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
> Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
> Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
This mirrors the overall National Curriculum aims for the end of KS2 but also we feel that by accomplishing these aims children will be prepared for their next stage of learning in KS3 as well as giving them the necessary skills to build upon in their future lives.
In EYFS we use materials from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and Maths is planned accordingly to suit the children’s needs throughout Nursery and Reception to allow longer time for consolidation. From Year 1 to Year 6 we base our curriculum for Maths around the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. White Rose is sequenced that progress is made year upon year and we feel that this is an important aspect so that children can constantly revisit earlier skills and build upon them. We also use the Times Tables Rock Stars app for children from Years 1 to 6 to successfully help boost children’s times tables recall speed.
