At Whetstone, we aim to ensure that all children become fluent and confident readers. To achieve this, children in Early Years and Key Stage One have discrete, daily phonics lessons. These lessons are planned to ensure that children of all abilities can access, engage and enjoy phonics, to build a bank of strategies, helping them become fluent readers and writers. Reading is a fundamental skill which children use across all areas of the curriculum. ‘Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development.’ (National Curriculum) We aim to give children the best possible start to their journey through a consistent, systematic approach enabling children’s phonic skills become automatic for them to not only understand what they read but for them to enjoy their reading as well.
