Physical Education
At Whetstone Field Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays an important role in promoting pupils’ physical health, emotional wellbeing, confidence, teamwork and resilience.
Our PE curriculum is taught using Twinkl PE Mastery, which provides a progressive and carefully sequenced programme of learning from EYFS through to Year 6. The scheme supports pupils in developing fundamental movement skills, physical competence, coordination, balance, agility and control, while also building their understanding of tactics, teamwork, fair play and healthy lifestyles.
Intent
Our aim is for every child to:
- develop confidence and competence in a broad range of physical activities;
- become physically active for sustained periods of time;
- develop fundamental movement skills and apply these with increasing control and precision;
- understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing;
- work successfully both independently and as part of a team;
- develop resilience, perseverance, cooperation and respect;
- experience competition in an appropriate and positive way; and
- leave primary school with the skills and confidence to remain physically active.
Implementation
PE is taught regularly across the school using the Twinkl PE Mastery scheme. Learning is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and physical skills build progressively as children move through the school.
Pupils experience a broad range of activities, including areas such as games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor activities. Older pupils also develop their understanding of tactics, rules, teamwork and competitive sport.
Teachers assess pupils throughout lessons and use this information to identify strengths, address misconceptions and plan appropriate next steps.
Inclusion
We are committed to ensuring that all children are able to participate successfully in PE. Activities, equipment, rules and teaching approaches are adapted where necessary to remove barriers and enable children with SEND, medical needs or other additional needs to take part alongside their peers.
The emphasis is on enabling every child to experience success, develop confidence and make progress from their individual starting point.
Swimming
Swimming and water safety form an important part of our PE provision. Pupils are taught to develop confidence and competence in the water and to understand how to keep themselves safe.
By the end of Year 6, we aim for pupils to be able to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
- use a range of strokes effectively; and
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Wider opportunities
Our PE curriculum is complemented by opportunities to take part in after-school clubs, sporting activities and competitive events. These opportunities allow pupils to develop their skills further, represent the school and experience a wider range of physical activity.
We want all pupils to develop a positive relationship with physical activity and to understand that being active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
